Gallagher's Luckyvale Farm
Paul and Cindy Peck Gallagher live in central NY on a 60-cow tie stall operation. Their children include Jean ( age 20 a junior at Cornell), Robert ( age 15), Kristen ( age 10 ) and Kathleen (age 6 ). The Gallagher family milks twice a day, maintains a 23,500 lb herd average and intensively grazes from May through November. The herd is comprised of ¾ Holsteins and the rest Guernseys, Jerseys and crossbred cattle. Paul also works about half-time as an attorney from their home. The labor force is made up of family and part-time youth.

Jean's involvement with Guernsey's began at age 8 when her grandfather, William Peck, sent her one of his last remaining Guernsey cows, a 2 yr old, Welcome Sergeant Fawn. Jean recalls her first year showing as a "shy little girl hiding behind her tall Guernsey cow." Needless to say, Jean placed near the bottom of the showmanship class, but her Guernsey cattle helped her grow and develop. Jean's achievements include breeding an All-American, a Reserve All-American, being crowned National Guernsey Queen in 2006 and being named a finalist in the Outstanding Guernsey youth contest in both 2005 and 2006. Jean has honed her skills and leadership abilities through showing at the local, state and national levels; participating in judging and dairy contests and through dairy bowl competitions. Jean works on the farm when home and does much of the milking, cow and calf care.

Fawn was flushed and two of the resulting heifers are doing well in the herd. Luckyvale Tiller Fiona-ET has a Special heifer due in December to Spider. At 1-11, Fiona had 16,978M, 4.8 percent, 823F, 3.3 percent and 556P. Fiona is scored VG-87 with an EX mammary. Fiona recently made 16 Silverado embryos. Three have been implanted, more will be put in and five are for sale. Fiona's march Royalty bull calf is also for sale.

Luckyvale Poker Faith-ET has a June Challenge ET, is due any day to Ice and has another Challenge due in September. Two more Challenge embryos were recently implanted. Faith is VG-86 and at 2-02 made 17, 092M 4.6 percent, 790F, 3.1 percent and 537P.

Robert also plays a vital role in the farm. He does much of the crop and chore work and has been very involved in machinery purchase decisions. Although Robert concentrates on breeding and developing jersey cattle, (he likes to be different from his older sister), he does care for Guernsey cattle in the show string and this past spring helped prepare and care for the state Guernsey sale cattle.

Kristen purchased her first calf, RED Roy JR Clara from Robert & Raymond Dennis. Clara has just been serviced to Silverado, hopefully for a March 08 calf. Clara's dam RED Plow Cookie Cam was one of the high sellers in the 2007 NY State Spring Guernsey Sale. While at the National Guernsey Convention, Kristen became interested in purchasing a Guernsey Gold Calf. These calves are sold in sales throughout the year and are available for purchase only by junior members. As 2-year-olds, the Guernsey Gold cattle compete in a production contest and a portion of the sale proceeds are awarded back to the owners for the top three production records. Kristen purchased Ripley Farms Adacka C Kathy, an August calf from their high producing Connie G family. Kathy's dam is a VG-88 Garrett daughter and granddam is EX-90 Goldfoot Conny. While at the convention, Kristen won the junior division of the youth speech contest.

Cindy Gallagher grew up showing Guernsey cattle on Welcome Stock Farm and her interest is in developing her children as well as the cattle. She is breeding up her own Guernseys and currently will be freshening out the first ¾ Guernsey heifer. Cindy has four 50% Guernseys milking and three 75% yearlings to breed. The girls plan to continue to increase their numbers by flushing and placing the eggs in Holstein heifers.

The bulls that they plan to use this coming year include Aaron, Silverado, Spider and Response along with young sires. Their goal is to breed a correct, medium sized Guernsey with an outstanding mammary system and feet and legs. The Gallaghers believe that Guernsey breeders should develop Guernsey cattle that feature good grazing abilities, high solids and improve strength and fertility traits. Look to Luckyvale genetics to do these things in the years to come. Cindy and Paul's motto is, "Developing kids and cows for the future." They think that these two goals should go hand in hand!
